Drop-off Details and Conditions
Free Recycling for Retired Navigation Devices
A GPS unit may no longer be needed after a vehicle change, an equipment upgrade, or a switch to another navigation system.
Ohata Resource Canada offers free recycling drop-off for eligible GPS equipment. Whether you have a dashboard navigation device or an older handheld receiver, a photo and model number can help our team identify it before your visit.
You can also browse our free recycling categories when sorting other unwanted equipment.

GPS Device Types and Category Guidance
This category focuses on standalone GPS navigation devices. Equipment with a GPS function does not automatically belong in the same recycling category.
Equipment Type | Description |
|---|---|
Portable vehicle GPS units | Separate navigation devices commonly attached to a dashboard or windshield mount |
Handheld GPS receivers | Portable devices used for outdoor navigation and location tracking |
Marine, specialist, or commercial GPS equipment | Contact our team to confirm acceptance and classification |
Built-in vehicle navigation systems | Identify separately; integrated screens and audio systems may require another category |
Smartphones and tablets | Separate equipment categories, even when used for navigation |

A phone or tablet used for navigation remains a phone or tablet. Check our smartphone buying conditions or tablet buying conditions rather than assuming it belongs in this free-drop-off category.
If you are unsure what you have, send us a photo of the complete device and its model label. There is no need to open the housing.
Saved Locations and Personal Information
Depending on the model, a GPS unit may retain home and work addresses, favourite destinations, recent searches, or trip information.
Before handing it over, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to:
Delete saved locations and travel history where supported.
Remove linked accounts or connected services where applicable.
Complete the recommended reset procedure.
Remove memory cards you want to keep.
Free recycling does not automatically include data erasure or certified data destruction. If the unit will not turn on or you cannot clear its information, contact us before drop-off to discuss your requirements.
Preparing the Device and Accessories
Switch off the GPS unit and disconnect it from external power before transport. Keep the housing and internal components intact.
You may also have a windshield mount, charging cable, vehicle adapter, or carrying case. Identify these accessories when contacting us so we can confirm what can be received with the device.
Keep loose accessories together and separate GPS equipment from materials you would like to sell. Our electronic scrap buying list explains the available purchasing categories.
Other Electronics From the Same Clear-Out
If you have other household or office electronics, check the relevant page for each item’s conditions:
These are separate categories; their acceptance requirements may differ from those for GPS units.
