Drop-off Details and Conditions

Make Room for Your Replacement Microwave

Once a replacement arrives, the old microwave can become an awkward item to store. Before moving it out of the kitchen, take a moment to empty it, check for loose parts, and note any damage.

Eligible microwaves can be brought to our Richmond yard for free recycling drop-off. This service does not provide payment for the appliance.

You do not need to dismantle it or remove metal parts. A complete appliance is easier for our team to identify and inspect.

Start With How It Is Installed

Freestanding Countertop Microwaves

A countertop microwave sits independently on a work surface or shelf. Unplug it, clear the surrounding area, and check that its cord will not catch when you move it.

If the appliance is too heavy or awkward to carry comfortably, arrange suitable assistance.

Built-In and Over-the-Range Microwaves

Installed microwaves may be attached to cabinetry, mounting brackets, ventilation ducts, or electrical connections.

Confirm acceptance before arranging removal. Send our team a photo and model number, then use an appropriate installer or service provider if you need help disconnecting the appliance.

Combination and Commercial Units

Microwaves with additional cooking functions and commercial kitchen models can differ from ordinary household units.

Provide the model, dimensions, approximate weight, and quantity so we can review the equipment before you transport it.

A Quick Check Inside and Around the Appliance

Area to Check

Before You Leave

Cooking compartment

Remove food, dishes, packaging, and stored items

Interior surfaces

Wipe away accessible food residue; report heavy contamination

Glass turntable and loose racks

Secure removable parts separately so they cannot slide or break

Door and hinges

Report broken glass, a loose door, or damaged hinges

Power cord

Unplug it and keep it contained; do not cut it off

Outer housing

Leave it attached and tell us about exposed or missing parts

Do not force a jammed door or open the outer casing. If something cannot be removed without dismantling the appliance, describe the issue when contacting us.

Tell Us About Damage Before Loading

A microwave that no longer heats presents a different handling situation from one with shattered door glass or exposed internal parts.

When asking about acceptance, describe the actual condition:

  • Does it turn on but fail to heat?

  • Is the door stuck, loose, or broken?

  • Are components missing?

  • Has it suffered fire, water, or contamination damage?

A clear photo is often more useful than a general description such as “broken.”

Contact our Richmond team before transporting substantially damaged equipment. Acceptance is confirmed after inspection.

Plan Your Drop-Off

For a household microwave, prepare it securely and check our yard access information before travelling.

For restaurant, office, or property clear-outs, contact us with the number of units and any unloading requirements.

If you are also bringing other electronics, review their individual conditions in our free recycling list. Keep materials intended for our scrap buying categories separate.

FAQ
1. Where can I drop off an old microwave in Richmond?
Bring eligible microwaves to Ohata Resource Canada, 11220 Voyageur Way, Unit 7, Richmond, BC. Our access page explains how to find the receiving entrance.
2. Is there a microwave recycling fee?
There is no recycling fee for qualifying microwaves accepted through this service. Free drop-off does not include payment for the appliance.
3. My microwave turns on but does not heat. Can I bring it?
Tell our team about the fault so we can confirm acceptance. There is no need to open the casing to investigate it.
4. Should I include the glass plate and removable racks?
Ask our team whether to include them. If transporting loose parts, secure them separately so they cannot move or break.
5. Can you remove a built-in microwave from my kitchen?
This page covers customer drop-off at our yard, not appliance removal. Arrange appropriate disconnection and removal separately after confirming acceptance.
6. Are toaster ovens and air fryers included?
Not automatically. They are different appliances, even when similar in size. Send us the model details to check their acceptance.
7. Should I strip the microwave for scrap before bringing it?
No. Leave the appliance intact. A complete microwave and separately presented components may have different classifications; removing parts does not guarantee a buying value.
