Drop-off Details and Conditions
Retiring an Old Generator
A generator may no longer be needed after an equipment upgrade, a property clear-out, or a change in backup-power arrangements.
Ohata Resource Canada offers free recycling drop-off for qualifying generators with all fluids removed. Before transporting your equipment, contact our Richmond team to confirm its type, condition, and handling requirements.
A photo of the complete unit and its model label is a useful starting point.

All Fluids Must Be Removed
Generators must have all fluids removed before drop-off. Depending on the equipment, this may include:
Gasoline, diesel, or other liquid fuel
Engine oil
Coolant
Other operating fluids
An empty fuel tank alone does not mean that every fluid has been removed.
Arrange preparation according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using a qualified service provider if needed. Do not bring fluids in separate containers or assume that draining is available at the yard.
Tell our team about any remaining leaks or uncertainty before transporting the generator.
Confirm the Equipment Type
Generators vary considerably in construction, size, and weight. Send us the model details rather than assuming that every unit can be received in the same way.
Please identify battery-powered portable power stations, UPS units, and other battery backup equipment separately. Although these products may be described as backup power or “solar generators,” they should not automatically be treated as engine-driven generators.
For equipment with an attached battery or fuel cylinder, ask our team about preparation requirements before visiting.
Transport and Unloading
Keep the generator secure during transport and contact us in advance about unloading.
For an initial review, provide:
Photos of the complete equipment and model label
Approximate dimensions and weight
Whether all fluids have been removed
Any damage, leaks, or missing components
Whether lifting equipment may be needed
Do not begin unloading heavy equipment until you have spoken with a staff member.
Damaged Units and Multiple Generators
If a generator does not run, describe its condition when contacting us. Mention fire damage, corrosion, broken housings, missing parts, or contamination.
For business clear-outs or several generators, send the quantity and equipment details in advance so we can discuss acceptance and handling.
Final acceptance and classification are confirmed after inspection. Equipment accepted through the free drop-off service is received without payment. Ask separately about any materials you would like evaluated for purchase.

- 1. Can I recycle a generator for free?
- Eligible generators with all fluids removed may qualify for free recycling drop-off. Contact our Richmond team with the equipment details before visiting.
- 2. Which fluids need to be removed?
- All fluids must be removed, including fuel, engine oil, and coolant where applicable. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular equipment.
- 3. Is emptying the fuel tank enough?
- Not necessarily. A generator may also contain oil, coolant, or other fluids. The requirement applies to all fluids, not only fuel.
- 4. Can Ohata drain the generator for me?
- Do not assume that fluid removal is available at the yard. Arrange for all fluids to be removed before arrival.
- 5. Can I bring a generator that does not run?
- Contact us with its model and condition so we can confirm acceptance. The fluid-removal requirement still applies to non-working equipment.
- 6. Are portable power stations included?
- Battery-powered portable power stations and UPS units should be identified separately. Send us a photo and model number to confirm the appropriate category.
- 7. What if the generator has a battery or fuel cylinder?
- Tell our team before preparing or transporting it. Ask for the applicable requirements rather than assuming attached batteries or cylinders are included.
- 8. Can I bring a large or stationary generator?
- Contact us first with its dimensions, approximate weight, and photos. Acceptance and unloading arrangements must be discussed before transport.
- 9. Will I receive payment?
- Generators accepted through this free drop-off service are received without payment. Ask our team separately about any applicable purchasing category.
- 10. Why is advance contact important for generators?
- Generators can differ greatly in weight, fluid systems, and handling needs. Reviewing those details first helps confirm whether the equipment can be received and how to prepare for unloading.
