What Is RAM-A Scrap?

RAM-A is the classification for qualifying standard desktop and laptop memory with complete gold-plated edge contacts. It includes full-size DIMMs commonly installed in desktop computers and shorter SO-DIMMs used in laptops, mini PCs, and compact systems.

These modules usually contain several memory ICs, smaller passive components, an identification chip where applicable, conductive PCB pathways, and a plated connector edge. Components may be installed on one or both sides.

RAM-A is separate from RAM-S, which covers qualifying high-density enterprise server memory with registered or buffered construction. It is also separate from covered, trimmed, damaged, contaminated, and blank memory categories.

RAM-A is determined by the physical module presented for inspection, not its memory capacity, operating speed, generation, brand, working condition, or original selling price.

Gold fingers are the long, narrow contacts arranged in a row along the edge of a RAM module. The name comes from their shape, which resembles fingers extending from the circuit board.

They slide into a compatible memory slot, where spring contacts press against them to create electrical connections between the RAM module and the computer.

RAM-A contacts should remain substantially complete. Minor straight insertion marks may form during ordinary use and do not automatically affect classification. Cut, trimmed, missing, or severely damaged contacts may place the module in another category.

A RAM module may have memory ICs on one side or both sides. Double-sided construction can increase component count, but it does not make a module RAM-S by itself.

Gold fingers are an important RAM-A feature, but the complete module, construction, covers, completeness, and condition must be evaluated together.


Desktop DIMMs, Laptop SO-DIMMs, and DDR Generations

A DIMM is the full-size memory format widely used in desktop computers, office PCs, workstations, and other systems with standard memory slots.

Both formats may qualify for RAM-A when they have standard consumer-memory construction, intact gold fingers, no large cover, and acceptable completeness and condition.

RAM-A includes qualifying modules from several generations:

  • DDR4

  • DDR5

The connector shape, notch position, pin count, electrical specifications, and physical design can differ among generations. Those distinctions are important when installing or reusing memory but do not establish its recycling grade.

A DDR5 module is not automatically graded above DDR4, DDR3, or an older generation. Likewise, a high-capacity module does not automatically have a higher recycling classification than a lower-capacity module.

Tin and nickel may be present in solder and contact structures. Silver and other metals may also occur depending on the module’s components, age, and manufacturing process.

The exact material composition varies. A photograph cannot confirm:

  • internal copper weight or PCB layer count

  • connector-plating thickness

  • bonding or interconnection materials inside an IC

  • component composition

  • the quantity of any precious metal

The external appearance of a memory IC does not reveal its internal construction. Similarly, the brightness or color of the gold fingers does not measure their plating thickness.

RAM-A value therefore comes from the combined recoverable-material profile of the complete module. It is not determined by one IC, the visible color of the contacts, memory capacity, or original retail price.

RAM-S and RAM-A can both have gold fingers and components on both sides. RAM-S follows the qualifying enterprise-memory route and commonly has a register or buffer together with greater IC density. Standard consumer ECC memory does not automatically qualify as RAM-S.

RAM-B includes modules presented with heat spreaders, metal shields, decorative enclosures, silver- or tin-colored contacts, or trimmed connector edges. A high-performance gaming module does not remain RAM-A merely because its underlying PCB may resemble ordinary desktop RAM.

If a detachable cover can be removed without cracking the PCB, pulling away components, or creating a safety risk, the exposed module may be evaluated according to its remaining construction. Do not force off bonded heat spreaders. Modules presented with their covers attached should be separated for RAM-B evaluation.

RAM-C applies when damage, contamination, or mixture prevents clean RAM-A classification. RAM-D applies when the principal memory ICs are absent or the board has extremely low component coverage.

Common classification mistakes include treating every gold-finger module as RAM-A, confusing ordinary desktop memory with RAM-S, grading from capacity or generation, ignoring attached covers, and overlooking trimmed contacts or missing components.

Buying Guidelines

RAM-A should remain substantially complete, uncovered, identifiable, dry, and reasonably clean. The original memory ICs, PCB sections, passive components, and gold-plated connector edge should remain present.

Working condition is generally not required. Manufacturer labels, ordinary insertion marks, minor surface scratches, light dust, and limited discoloration do not automatically prevent classification.
