What Is RAM-B Grade Scrap?
RAM-B is an Ohata classification for qualifying computer memory modules with physical features that separate them from ordinary uncovered gold-finger RAM.

The category primarily covers:
Covered or shielded RAM with attached heat spreaders, cooling plates, or decorative housings
Silver-edge RAM with contacts that appear silver, gray, or tin-colored instead of the usual gold color
Trimmed RAM with part or all of the connector-contact edge removed
These modules may be found in desktop computers, laptops, workstations, servers, gaming systems, industrial computers, and other electronic equipment. Their original application does not establish the grade. The item does not need to be in working condition.
RAM-B is identified mainly by the module’s cover, visible connector finish, altered contact edge, completeness, and condition.
How to Identify RAM-B
Begin by confirming that the item is a computer memory module. Desktop DIMMs are longer, while laptop SO-DIMMs are shorter. Both forms can appear within RAM-B.
Look for one or more of the following characteristics:

A module does not need to display every feature in the table. An attached heat spreader, silver-colored contacts, or a qualifying trimmed connector edge may provide a RAM-B classification route.

Brand names, labels, memory specifications, and PCB color can assist with identification, but they do not determine the recycling grade.
Covered and Shielded RAM
Covered RAM has a heat spreader, shield, cooling plate, or decorative housing attached to the memory module. These covers are especially common on gaming and performance-oriented desktop memory, although they may appear on other module types.

Common cover features include metal side plates, cooling fins, manufacturer logos, colored finishes, plastic decorations, and RGB lighting assemblies. The covering may conceal the number, arrangement, and condition of the memory ICs underneath.
Attached covers add non-board material to the module and can make inspection more difficult. If a cover is designed to detach and can be removed safely without bending the PCB or pulling off components, it may be separated before evaluation. Covers secured with strong adhesive or thermal pads should not be forced off when removal could damage the module.
After a cover is removed, the uncovered module may be evaluated according to its visible contacts, component arrangement, completeness, and condition.
Do not pry, bend, heat, or cut a module merely to remove its cover. If safe removal is uncertain, leave the module intact for inspection.
Silver-Edge and Trimmed RAM
Silver-edge RAM has connector contacts that appear silver, gray, or tin-colored rather than gold. The visible color helps separate these modules from ordinary RAM-A gold-finger memory.

Appearance alone does not confirm the exact metal or plating composition. Lighting, wear, oxidation, coatings, and manufacturing differences can change how the contacts look. The complete connector edge and both sides of the module should be inspected.
Trimmed RAM has had part or all of its edge-contact section removed. Common signs include a straight cut across the bottom of the PCB, shortened contacts, an uneven board edge, or a missing strip where the gold fingers would normally be located.
The trimmed edge distinguishes the module from complete RAM-A or RAM-S material. However, trimming does not make all damaged RAM eligible for RAM-B. A module with extensive PCB loss, missing memory ICs, severe breakage, or heavy contamination may belong to a lower classification.
RAM-B recognizes specific connector and construction differences, not unrestricted damage or component removal.
Comparison With Other RAM Grades
RAM-S generally covers qualifying high-density registered or buffered memory with gold-plated contacts and the applicable enterprise-style component arrangement.
RAM-A covers qualifying uncovered desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs with intact gold-plated edge contacts.
RAM-B covers qualifying covered or shielded modules, silver-edge RAM, and trimmed RAM.
RAM-C covers qualifying lower-value mixed, damaged, dirty, incomplete, or otherwise downgraded memory that does not meet the requirements of a higher RAM grade.
RAM-D covers qualifying blank or very low-component RAM boards with little or no installed memory-chip population.
A server module is not automatically RAM-S, and gaming memory is not automatically RAM-B. The physical module must match the requirements of the applicable category.
When a module has characteristics associated with more than one grade, its complete construction and current physical condition determine the final classification.

Buying Guidelines
RAM-B modules should remain reasonably clean, dry, and identifiable. Except for connector trimming recognized within this category, the original PCB and main memory ICs should generally remain present.
Minor scratches, ordinary insertion marks, labels, light surface wear, or limited discoloration do not automatically prevent RAM-B classification.
Classification may be affected by:
missing memory ICs or other major components
broken or extensively cut PCB sections
severe corrosion or battery-related residue
burned, melted, or carbonized areas
oil, mud, chemicals, adhesive buildup, or heavy dirt
loose metal, plastic, screws, or unrelated material
mixing RAM-B with other RAM grades
Keep covered RAM, silver-edge RAM, trimmed RAM, and other memory grades separated whenever practical. Proper sorting makes the visible characteristics easier to inspect and helps prevent unlike material from being evaluated together.

Do not burn modules, scrape contacts, remove ICs, cut intact gold fingers, or use chemicals to test the metal content. These actions can remove recoverable material, damage the PCB, and create health, fire, or environmental hazards.
Ohata Classification
The Ohata RAM Scrap Classification is a purchasing and recycling system based on the physical characteristics of computer memory modules. RAM-B is evaluated according to its module type, attached covering, visible connector finish, trimmed-contact condition, component population, completeness, contamination, and recoverable-material profile.
Memory capacity, operating speed, DDR generation, brand, working condition, server use, gaming designation, and original price do not determine the grade by themselves. Final classification, acceptance, and purchasing value are confirmed after inspection under current buying requirements.
