Drop-off Details and Conditions
Free Recycling for Unwanted Speakers
A speaker does not need to produce clear sound—or any sound—to be recycled.
Ohata Resource Canada welcomes working and broken speakers for free recycling at its Richmond yard. You can bring a single speaker, a pair, or the remaining units from an old sound system.
There is no need to replace a damaged cone, repair a connection, or find a matching speaker before drop-off.

Common Speaker Types
Speakers come in different sizes and may work independently or connect to other audio equipment.
Speaker type | Common examples |
|---|---|
Bookshelf and floor-standing speakers | Home stereo speakers used with a separate amplifier or receiver |
Computer speakers | Desktop speakers, including sets with a small subwoofer |
Powered speakers | Speakers with built-in amplification and an external power connection |
Portable and Bluetooth speakers | Compact speakers, including battery-powered models |
Soundbars | Speaker units commonly placed below a television |
Subwoofers | Separate units used to reproduce low-frequency sound |
Home theatre speaker sets | Multiple speakers used together for surround sound |
For unusually large PA speakers, installed systems, or equipment requiring special unloading, contact our team before delivery.

Speakers, Receivers, and Amplifiers
A speaker produces sound. An amplifier supplies the audio signal that drives it, while an audio receiver may combine amplification, source selection, and other functions.
Some speakers have amplification built in, but a separate amplifier or AV receiver should still be identified as its own device.
When clearing a complete system, group the components by type:
Speakers and subwoofers.
Separate amplifiers or receivers.
CD, DVD, or other source players.
Remote controls.
External adapters and connecting cables.
For disc players, review our CD and DVD player recycling page. Other equipment can be checked through our free recycling categories.
Broken Speakers and Missing Parts
Loss of sound, distortion, damaged cones, and missing speaker grilles do not need to be repaired before recycling. A missing remote, cable, or matching unit does not prevent you from bringing the speaker.
Leave the cabinet, speaker drivers, wiring, and any built-in electronics together. Do not remove magnets, circuit boards, or other internal parts solely to prepare the equipment for drop-off.
If parts are already detached, keep them together and describe what remains. If you are unsure how to pack an awkward or damaged unit, our team can help with preparation questions.
Battery-Powered Speakers
Switch portable speakers off before packing. A battery that no longer holds a charge does not mean the speaker needs repair before recycling.

Swollen or leaking batteries and hazardous contamination require separate handling. Contact us before transporting equipment in these conditions. Do not open the enclosure to reach an internal battery.
Packing Speakers for Transport
Disconnect external power and audio cables.
Remove loose objects from around the equipment.
Group matching adapters, remotes, and cables together.
Support larger speakers from the cabinet base rather than their drivers or grilles.
Pack the units so they remain stable during transport.
For wall-mounted or ceiling-installed speakers, arrange appropriate removal before delivery. The service described here is customer drop-off at the Richmond yard.
If you are replacing equipment at an office, venue, or other workplace, an approximate quantity and dimensions can help plan receiving for a larger load.
Bring Other Accepted Electronics Too
A speaker clear-out may also leave you with a television, monitor, or disc player. Review each item’s conditions before loading:
Computers and loose electronic components may have separate scrap purchasing conditions.
Speaker recycling under this service is free, without payment to the customer. Purchasing categories for individual materials do not establish a purchase price for the complete speaker.
