Key Drop-off Introduction
  • Free recycling drop-off for eligible water coolers and water heaters in Richmond, BC.

  • Working and nonworking units are welcome. Keep the housing and major components together.
  • Equipment must already be disconnected from water, electrical and gas connections, as applicable.

  • Accepted free-drop-off items have no recycling fee and no purchase payment.

Drop-off Details and Conditions

Recycling an Old Water Dispenser or Water Heater

Replacing a water dispenser or hot-water tank can leave a bulky appliance that is difficult to store and move.

Ohata Resource Canada accepts eligible water coolers and water heaters for free recycling drop-off at our Richmond yard, with fluids removed. Equipment does not need to be working.

Before transport, the unit must be disconnected, drained and ready to handle. You do not need to repair it or dismantle its internal components for this service.

For accepted equipment, you do not pay a recycling fee, and we do not provide a purchase payment. Browse our free-drop-off category for other published items.

Identify the Equipment You Are Bringing

“Water cooler” and “water heater” describe several different appliances. Identify the unit by its function and overall construction.

Equipment

Preparation or information needed

Bottled-water dispensers

Remove the bottle and drain the appliance’s water reservoirs. Identify models with refrigeration.

Plumbed-in water coolers or dispensers

Have the water supply disconnected and drain remaining water. Identify any sealed cooling system.

Storage-tank water heaters

Have the unit disconnected from services and drained. Provide its approximate size if unloading assistance is needed.

Tankless water heaters

Bring the disconnected, drained unit with its housing and major components together.

Commercial or unusual equipment

Contact our team with the equipment type, approximate dimensions and handling requirements.

This page does not automatically cover boilers, radiators, air conditioners, refrigerators or every appliance that contains water.

If you are unsure what you have, a photograph of the complete appliance and its model label can help us identify it.

Remove Fluids Before Transport

Water and other drainable fluids must be removed before the equipment is brought to the yard. An appliance that looks empty may still contain water in a reservoir, tank or connected tubing.

Arrange draining according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Water heaters can retain hot water and pressure, so allow suitable preparation before moving them.

For equipment connected to plumbing, fixed electrical wiring or gas, use an appropriate service professional when needed. This recycling service does not include disconnecting equipment at your property.

Remove detachable water bottles and keep unrelated containers separate. Tell us if the appliance previously held chemicals, treatment fluids or anything other than ordinary drinking water.

If a unit continues to leak or you cannot confirm that it has been drained, contact us before transport.

A Note About Refrigerated Water Coolers

Some water coolers use a sealed refrigeration system to chill drinking water.

Draining the drinking-water reservoir does not remove the refrigerant. Do not cut refrigerant lines, puncture the cooling system or attempt to release refrigerant yourself.

Identify a refrigerated unit when contacting our team so we can confirm the receiving requirements. Any required refrigerant work must be handled by a qualified professional.

Leave the Appliance Recognizable

Keep the housing and major components together whenever practical. There is no need to remove heating elements, control boards, compressors or insulation simply to prepare an appliance for an inquiry.

Working and nonworking equipment can be considered for this service. Common reasons for retirement include failed heating or cooling, damaged controls and ordinary wear.

If parts have already been removed, describe what remains. Keep loose components separate rather than placing them inside the tank or housing.

For contaminated equipment, sharp exposed metal or damage that makes handling hazardous, speak with our receiving team before loading it.

Plan How the Unit Will Be Moved

Even after draining, a water heater can be heavy and awkward to handle. Check the equipment’s dimensions and arrange suitable lifting help.

Before leaving:

  • Confirm that service connections have been disconnected.

  • Check that drainable fluids have been removed.

  • Secure doors, loose panels and detachable parts.

  • Protect exposed edges and fittings.

  • Secure the appliance against movement in the vehicle.

  • Arrange help for loading and unloading.

Contact us in advance if the unit requires lifting equipment or special unloading arrangements. See our Richmond yard access information when planning your visit.

Free Drop-Off and Materials Offered for Purchase

This page describes free recycling of accepted appliances. It does not establish a buying price for a complete water cooler or water heater.

If you also have qualifying electronic scrap to sell, review our Canadian buying categories and keep those materials separate.

For example, existing loose electronic components can be compared with our circuit-board categories. Do not dismantle an appliance simply because it contains a circuit board.

Other household electronics have separate guidance, including microwave recycling drop-off and TV recycling drop-off.
