Drop-off Details and Conditions

Free Recycling for Electronic Musical Keyboards

A keyboard may have stopped producing sound, developed broken keys or simply been replaced by another instrument. You do not need to restore it before recycling it.

Ohata Resource Canada accepts working and nonworking electronic musical keyboards for free recycling drop-off at our Richmond yard. Missing power adapters, pedals or cables do not mean you need to replace those accessories before visiting.

This category covers musical equipment with a piano-style keyboard. Computer typing keyboards belong to a different equipment category.

Which Instruments Belong Here?

Electronic keyboards come in different sizes and can produce sound themselves or control another device.

Equipment

Common features

Portable electronic keyboards

Piano-style keys, instrument sounds and often built-in speakers

Arranger keyboards

Automatic accompaniment, rhythm patterns and multiple instrument voices

Keyboard synthesizers

Piano-style keys with controls for creating or modifying sounds

MIDI keyboard controllers

Keys and controls that send performance information to a computer or sound module; built-in sound is not required

Compact digital pianos

Electronic instruments with piano-style keys, often designed for use on a separate stand

Large cabinet-style digital pianos, electronic organs and bulky multi-part instruments need separate handling arrangements. Contact our Richmond team with the approximate size and any unloading requirements before bringing them.

Electronic musical keyboards come in different sizes and designs. Keep the keys, controls and housing together when preparing yours for drop-off. Reference image only.

Acoustic pianos, computer keyboards and standalone audio equipment should be identified separately rather than assumed to fall under this category.

Broken Keys or No Sound? Bring the Instrument as It Is

An electronic keyboard does not need to play correctly to be recycled.

Common faults include:

  • No power or intermittent power

  • Keys that stick or no longer respond

  • Missing or distorted sound

  • A damaged display

  • Broken buttons, knobs or connectors

  • Missing accessories

There is no need to buy a replacement adapter or test every key before drop-off. Keep the remaining housing, keys and internal components together.

If the instrument is contaminated, severely burned or has damage that makes handling hazardous, contact us before transport.

Adapters, Pedals and Other Accessories

Bring matching accessories if you are also retiring them:

  • Power adapters

  • Sustain or expression pedals

  • Detachable music rests

  • Instrument-specific cables

Keep small accessories in a bag or container beside the keyboard. Label a matching adapter if you know which instrument it belongs to.

Keyboard stands, benches, amplifiers and other larger accessories should be identified separately. A musical keyboard’s acceptance does not automatically establish the conditions for every item in the setup.

For separate sound equipment, review our speaker recycling page and audio receiver recycling page.

Check for Saved Music and Removable Storage

Some electronic instruments store recordings, custom sounds, user settings or other information.

Before handing over the keyboard:

  1. Save any recordings or settings you want to keep.

  2. Remove USB drives, memory cards and other removable media.

  3. Clear personal information using the manufacturer’s instructions when practical.

  4. Check the music rest and case for sheet music or personal items.

Do not force open a nonworking instrument to reach internal storage. If you cannot access saved information, let our team know before handing it over.

Packing a Keyboard for Transport

Disconnect the power adapter and external cables before moving the instrument. Support it underneath rather than lifting it by the keys, knobs or music rest.

Protect the keys and controls from pressure. Avoid stacking heavy equipment on top, and keep the instrument covered and dry during transport.

If the keyboard uses batteries, check the normal battery compartment. Do not dismantle the instrument to reach an internal battery. Contact us before transporting equipment with swollen, leaking or visibly damaged batteries.

For heavy instruments, arrange suitable help and discuss unloading with our team before your visit.

Recycling Other Electronics During the Same Visit

You can browse our free electronics drop-off category when clearing out a music room, home or workplace.

Related equipment has its own guidance:

If you also have computers, loose circuit boards or other qualifying e-scrap for purchase, keep those materials separate.

Circuit-board buying categories do not establish a purchase price for a complete musical keyboard. Leave the instrument assembled for this free-drop-off service.
