Drop-off Details and Conditions
Recycling an Unused Satellite TV System
An old satellite dish can remain long after the television subscription has ended. Indoors, the receiver, remote and cables may still be taking up shelf space.
Ohata Resource Canada accepts satellite TV receivers and dishes for free recycling drop-off in Richmond, BC. Working and nonworking equipment is welcome. You can bring a receiver or dish separately—you do not need the complete system.
For accepted free-drop-off equipment, there is no recycling fee and no purchase payment. If you are unsure about an item, our Richmond team can help identify it.
You can also browse our free electronics drop-off category for other equipment.

What Parts of a Satellite TV System Can You Bring?
Satellite TV systems have indoor and outdoor components. Keeping recognizable equipment together makes drop-off easier, but missing accessories do not automatically prevent acceptance.
Equipment | What to bring |
|---|---|
Satellite TV receiver | The indoor box used to receive satellite television. Leave its housing and internal components together. |
Satellite dish | The detached outdoor dish, with its receiving arm and attached components if available. |
Matching remote and power adapter | Bring these with the receiver if you still have them. |
Related cables and small fittings | Bundle them separately so they are easy to handle. |
A satellite TV receiver connects to a satellite television system. An audio receiver controls sound sources and speakers. Although both use the word “receiver,” they serve different purposes.
Satellite internet terminals, large commercial antennas and other communications equipment can have different handling requirements. Contact us if you are unsure whether your equipment belongs in this category.
Check Ownership Before Recycling a Receiver
Before handing over a receiver, make sure it belongs to you and does not need to be returned to your service provider. Equipment supplied through a rental or service agreement may have return requirements.
Recycling a receiver does not cancel a television subscription. Arrange any account cancellation or equipment return directly with your provider.
If the device stores recordings, account details or network settings, remove information you wish to keep and clear personal settings where possible. A nonworking receiver does not need to be repaired simply to prepare it for recycling.
Bring the Dish Once It Has Been Removed
This page covers drop-off at our Richmond yard. It does not include removing equipment from a roof, wall or pole.
If your dish is still installed, arrange suitable removal before transporting it. Use a qualified installer when access or mounting conditions make removal difficult.
Once the dish is detached:
Keep loose bolts, brackets and fittings in a small container.
Secure the dish so it cannot slide or roll during transport.
Cover exposed sharp edges.
Keep the load manageable for lifting and unloading.
There is no need to cut up the dish or open the receiver to remove circuit boards. Contact our receiving team about unusually large dishes, long mounting poles or equipment that needs special unloading arrangements.
A Missing Signal Does Not Mean You Need to Repair It
Old satellite equipment is often retired because the service has changed, the receiver no longer starts or the system is no longer compatible with the household’s needs.
You do not need to demonstrate reception or restore the equipment to working condition before an ordinary recycling drop-off. Missing remotes, disconnected service and ordinary equipment faults are not reasons to repair the system first.
Is Your Box Listed for Purchase Instead?
Some television boxes may qualify for our separate e-scrap purchasing categories:
A satellite receiver is not automatically eligible for a Cable/DVR buying category. Classification depends on the actual equipment and its condition.
If you would like a box evaluated for payment, tell our team before completing the free drop-off. You do not need to open it to check for a hard drive; bring it assembled for identification and inspection.
A unit that does not qualify for purchase is not automatically approved for free recycling. Our team can clarify the appropriate option.
If you already have loose circuit boards, keep them separate and review our circuit-board buying categories. Those categories do not establish a purchase price for a complete satellite receiver.

If you are also bringing computers, CPUs, computer memory or other materials for purchase, keep them separate from your free-drop-off equipment and tell our team which materials you would like evaluated.

- 1. Where can I recycle a satellite receiver or dish in Richmond, BC?
- Bring accepted satellite TV equipment to Ohata Resource Canada Inc., 11220 Voyageur Way, Unit 7, Richmond, BC. Use the rear warehouse receiving area. See our yard access page for directions.
- 2. Do you accept satellite receivers that no longer work?
- Yes. Working and nonworking satellite TV receivers are welcome. You do not need to repair the box, reactivate a subscription or demonstrate reception before drop-off.
- 3. Can I bring a satellite dish without the receiver?
- Yes. Receivers and dishes can be dropped off separately. The dish must already be detached from its roof, wall or pole and ready for unloading.
- 4. Do I need an appointment?
- No appointment is required for an ordinary drop-off during regular business hours. Contact our team in advance for oversized dishes, commercial quantities or equipment requiring special unloading.
- 5. Can I recycle a receiver supplied by my television provider?
- Check whether you own it before bringing it. Rented or loaned receivers may need to be returned to the provider. Recycling equipment does not cancel your subscription or settle any account obligations.
- 6. Are the remote control, cables and power adapter required?
- No. Missing accessories do not prevent an ordinary receiver drop-off. Bring matching accessories if you have them. You can also review our remote control recycling page for remotes you are discarding separately.
- 7. Should I open the receiver or remove its hard drive?
- Keep the receiver assembled. Clear personal settings and remove information you wish to keep when practical, but do not dismantle the box just to identify its internal components. Tell our team if you have concerns about stored information.
- 8. Do you remove installed satellite dishes?
- This service is for drop-off at our yard. Arrange removal separately before transporting the dish. For difficult mounting locations, use a qualified installer.
- 9. Is a satellite TV receiver the same as an audio receiver?
- No. A satellite TV receiver decodes television signals received through a dish. An audio receiver selects sound sources and powers speakers. See our separate Audio Receiver Recycling Drop-Off page.
- 10. Is drop-off free, or will Ohata pay for the equipment?
- Accepted free-drop-off items have no recycling fee and no purchase payment. Some television boxes may qualify separately under our Cable/DVR with hard drive or Cable/DVR without hard drive buying categories. Ask for a purchasing evaluation before completing the free drop-off; satellite receivers do not automatically qualify.
