  • Free recycling drop-off for eligible VCRs and Betamax players or recorders in Richmond, BC.

  • Keep the machine assembled, including when a cassette is stuck inside.

Drop-off Details and Conditions

Check for Recordings Before Retiring Your VCR

A VCR may have been unused for years while a cassette remains inside. Before clearing it out, check whether it contains family videos or other recordings you want to keep.

Ohata Resource Canada offers free recycling drop-off for eligible VCR and Betamax equipment at its Richmond yard.

The machine and its recorded media should be considered separately. Acceptance of a player does not automatically include loose VHS or Betamax tapes.

If you are sorting other equipment at the same time, browse our free recycling categories.

Identify the Player Before Drop-Off

Equipment type

What to identify

VHS VCR

A player or recorder that uses VHS videocassettes

Betamax machine

A player or recorder that uses Betamax cassettes

DVD/VCR combination unit

A machine with both a disc tray and a videocassette compartment

Other video equipment

Provide the model so its category can be checked

Standalone disc players have their own CD and DVD player recycling page.

A cable box or DVR is a different category from a cassette-based VCR. Review the buying conditions for Cable/DVR boxes with a hard drive or without a hard drive when identifying those devices.

Not sure which machine you have? Send a photo of its front panel and model label through our contact page. There is no need to open the housing.

Personal Tapes and Stuck Cassettes

Decide which recordings you want to retain before handing over the equipment.

If the machine can be operated safely, use its normal eject function to remove a cassette. For a DVD/VCR combination unit, check both the cassette compartment and disc tray.

If the tape is jammed or the machine will not operate, do not force the mechanism or dismantle the enclosure. Tell our team that media remains inside.

Recycling does not include transferring recordings, erasing their contents, or returning tapes after handover. Arrange any recording transfer or media retrieval you need before recycling the machine.

For questions about a cassette left inside, send the model and a description through our contact page.

Preparing the Player for Drop-Off

Once you have checked for recordings:

  1. Unplug the machine and disconnect external cables.

  2. Leave the housing, cassette mechanism, and internal components together.

  3. Group remotes, external adapters, and connecting cables separately.

  4. Note missing parts, exposed components, or significant damage.

  5. Pack the equipment so it remains stable during transport.

There is no need to open the machine to diagnose a playback fault or identify its circuit boards.

For multiple units from a school, workplace, or storage clear-out, prepare a short list of models, quantities, and known damage before arranging delivery.

Clearing Out the Rest of Your Video Setup

A player, television, and other equipment may have different acceptance conditions. Check the relevant page for each item:

If your clear-out also includes material you would like to sell, review our separate electronic scrap buying categories.

Free recycling and scrap purchasing are separate services. The presence of metal or circuit boards inside a VCR does not establish a purchase price for the complete machine.

Ohata Resource Canada offers free recycling drop-off for eligible VCRs at 11220 Voyageur Way, Unit 7, Richmond. Review our yard access information before visiting.
2. Does this category include Betamax players and recorders?
Yes. This page covers eligible Betamax machines as well as VHS VCRs. Provide the model if you are unsure which format the machine uses.
3. What if the VCR no longer turns on or plays tapes?
Describe the fault and any visible damage. Do not open the housing to diagnose it as part of drop-off preparation.
4. Can I recycle a VCR with a tape stuck inside?
Tell our team that a cassette remains inside before handover. If the recording matters to you, arrange retrieval before recycling. Do not assume the tape can be removed or returned through this service.
5. Can I bring loose VHS or Betamax tapes?
Ask about recorded media separately. Acceptance of the player does not automatically include loose tapes, cases, or a video collection.
6. Does recycling include converting home videos to digital files?
No. Video transfer is not included in this recycling service. Arrange any transfer you need before handing over the machine or recordings.
7. Can I bring a DVD/VCR combination unit?
Identify it as a combination unit and provide the model. Check both the disc tray and cassette compartment for media you want to retain.
8. Should I include the remote and cables?
List available accessories with the machine so their acceptance can be confirmed. Keep loose cables and small accessories grouped together.
9. Can Vancouver residents bring a VCR and TV together?
Check each item’s conditions before travelling to Richmond. The television has its own acceptance requirements, which may differ from those for a VCR.
10. Should I remove the circuit boards before drop-off?
No. Keep the machine assembled for this equipment category. Separate circuit-board buying conditions do not automatically apply to a complete VCR.
