Introduction, Construction, Components, and Recycling Value
Any circuit board that satisfies the required S Grade construction, component, and value characteristics may be purchased at the applicable S Grade price, regardless of the original equipment in which it was installed.
S Grade mainly covers premium computer boards and selected legacy high-value boards produced during periods when electronic manufacturers commonly used relatively large amounts of gold, ceramic semiconductor packaging, thick plated contacts, and robust multilayer printed circuit board construction. Examples may include older enterprise computer boards, specialized processing boards, legacy data-processing hardware, and boards carrying three or more ceramic processors.
A particularly recognizable S Grade example is a circuit board fitted with three or more purple ceramic CPUs or similar ceramic processor packages. These processors are valuable because they may contain gold-plated lids, pins, internal bonding wires, plated contact surfaces, and ceramic substrates. The combination of several ceramic CPUs on a single board can substantially increase the precious-metal concentration compared with ordinary consumer motherboards.
Another important S Grade category is the non-SATA hard disk drive board. Older hard drive controller boards that use legacy interfaces and exhibit dense integrated-circuit construction may contain more valuable chip packages and plated connections than many simplified modern SATA hard drive boards. Ohata S Grade Classification and Identification Guide
The official Ohata classification system places S Grade below SS Grade and above A+ Grade. SS Grade generally represents very high-value telecommunications, smartphone, server-backplane, optical communication, network switching, and cellular infrastructure boards. S Grade focuses more heavily on premium computer hardware and legacy boards whose value is associated with ceramic processors, gold edge contacts, high-quality construction, and dense semiconductor content.
The most direct S Grade indicator is a circuit board carrying three or more qualifying ceramic CPUs. Purple ceramic processors are commonly used as a visual example because their ceramic bodies and gold-bearing structures are easy to distinguish from later plastic processor packages. Nevertheless, color alone should not be treated as the only criterion. Inspectors must confirm that the components are actual ceramic processor or high-value ceramic semiconductor packages rather than ordinary plastic ICs or decorative covers.
