CPU A Grade in the Ohata Board Scrap Classification System primarily covers modern Land Grid Array (LGA) processors. Typical examples include Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 processors, as well as many Intel Xeon models. Classification is based on the CPU’s physical construction and recycling characteristics. Not merely its brand, model number, operating speed or original retail price.
A Grade CPUs normally have a flat organic substrate, a metal heat spreader on the top and a dense array of flat, gold-plated contact pads underneath. Unlike PGA processors, they do not have projecting pins on the CPU itself. Their recoverable value comes from the plated contacts, internal bonding materials, copper circuitry and other metallic components. Any processor that meets the complete Ohata CPU A Grade standard is purchased at the applicable A Grade price.
Ohata CPU A Grade Classification
The most important identification feature is the LGA contact surface. Turn the processor over and inspect its underside. A qualifying CPU should have a regular field of flat gold-colored contact pads rather than pins or solder balls.
The identification procedure is:
Confirm that the item is a genuine CPU.
Check for an LGA package with flat contact lands.
Verify that the processor is reasonably complete, identifiable and free from prohibited contamination.
Inspect for serious cracks, corrosion, missing substrate sections or other damage.
Compare the item against both higher and lower Ohata grades before confirming CPU A Grade.
The model marking can assist identification, but construction remains decisive. Therefore, CPUs of different generations and model numbers may receive the same A Grade price when they satisfy the same grading requirements.
Buying Standards
Processors should be kept dry, clean and separated by grade. Remove loose heatsinks, fans and unrelated hardware unless otherwise agreed. Do not mix A Grade CPUs with broken, corroded, dirty or unidentified processors, because mixed material requires additional sorting and may be downgraded. Avoid scraping the contacts or using destructive methods to test metal content.

CPU A Grade is distinguished from CPU S Grade by its interface: S Grade uses a PGA design with projecting gold-plated pins, while A Grade uses flat LGA contact pads. Higher SS and SSS Grades normally use older ceramic packages with gold-plated pins; SSS Grade additionally has a gold cap.
CPU B Grade covers BGA processors and IC chips with solder balls underneath. CPU C Grade covers fiber-package processors that do not meet the defining A Grade LGA criteria. Cartridge-style Slot 1 or Slot A modules belong to CPU D Grade, while small plastic ICs with relatively low precious-metal content fall under CPU E Grade. Broken, heavily contaminated, corroded, mixed or unknown CPU scrap is normally CPU F Grade.
