Anyway, back to circuit boards. I want to explain what makes a circuit board stripped, which components should remain attached, and whether removed parts may have buying value on their own. What Is a Stripped Circuit Board?

A stripped circuit board is a board from which one or more original components have been removed. One board may simply have its removable CPU and memory taken out. Another may be missing soldered chips, connectors, card-edge contacts, heat sinks, or complete sections of the printed circuit board, usually called the PCB.

What Is Commonly Stripped From a Circuit Board?

The parts most commonly removed are usually the ones that appear valuable, are easy to detach, or may have a separate buying category:

  • CPUs and removable processors

  • RAM and other memory modules

  • Large integrated circuits

  • Gold fingers and card-edge contacts

  • Gold-plated connectors and pin headers

  • Expansion cards and daughterboards

  • Aluminum or copper heat sinks

A CPU, or central processing unit, is the main processor in a computer. Desktop and server CPUs are often designed to come out of a socket. If you remove one, keep it complete, protect its pins or contact surface, and sort it separately.

Many laptop and equipment processors are soldered directly to the board. Heating, prying, or cutting out one of these processors can damage both the chip and the surrounding PCB. Soldered processors should normally stay attached.

A removable heat sink can sometimes be separated without damaging the board, but there’s little benefit in removing it if doing so will crack or cut the PCB.


What Should Remain Attached?

Permanently attached electronic components should generally stay on the board. These include soldered ICs, CPU sockets, memory slots, onboard connectors, relays, pin headers, and intact card-edge contacts.

Don’t pry off chips, cut away gold-colored areas, or break the PCB into smaller pieces. A removed component may have value, but the damage caused during removal can reduce the value of the board left behind.

Removable CPUs, RAM modules, expansion cards, and daughterboards may be sorted separately because they can have their own buying categories. Keep these items complete if you remove them.

If you don’t recognize a component, leave it attached. A photograph of the assembled board is usually easier to evaluate than a container filled with unidentified chips, sockets, metal pieces, and PCB fragments.

Batteries require additional care. Don’t puncture, crush, bend, or forcibly remove a swollen or damaged battery. Contact the yard before bringing material with a questionable battery condition.


Do Stripped Parts Have Value on Their Own?

Some removed parts may have their own buying category. Classification depends on the component type, construction, completeness, condition, and sorting.

Complete removable CPUs and desktop or laptop RAM modules are common examples. Depending on their construction, removed soldered components may be evaluated as BGA CPUs and IC chips or plastic IC and processor chips. Certain intact plastic gold-plated connectors may also have a separate category.

Expansion cards and daughterboards are normally evaluated as circuit boards rather than loose components. Aluminum or copper heat sinks may be evaluated according to their metal composition, but they should be kept separate from CPUs, RAM, IC chips, connectors, and circuit boards.

A container of complete CPUs or sorted IC chips is easier to identify than a mixture of processors, broken chips, clipped contacts, screws, solder, and board fragments.
